Freedom - How Do You Express Your Soul?

(c) AnnaMariah Nau

I know I normally post about the gemstone of the month, but what’s been coming up for me is Freedom and what it means to me. This, of course, prompts me to ask the question, “What does freedom mean to you?” I’m not just talking our Bill of Rights type freedoms; I’m talking about personal freedom.

What would your life look like if you had an inner freedom that allowed you to transcend the roles that were written for you by default? Are you clinging to the last threads, expectations and protocols of a learned way of making a living and “supporting” your family? Do you find joy in each day? Or are you struggling to find more meaning and life and your life?

Why is it so difficult to shift out of those roles and move into an authentic expression of who we truly are meant to be? There is an inherent energy in our culture, and in most cultures, that say that it’s important to stay in the role you were given and that our very survival is at stake. Well, that all comes from caveman days when that was true.

If each member of the group didn’t perform their responsibilities, they were all in danger. Guess what, that’s not true any longer. We’ve developed a society in which all those duties are dispersed and in which we are actually refreshed and nourished by those who step outside of the lines and provide new ideas and model new ways of being and living for our consideration.

Is everyone going to appreciate it when you stand up and stand out as your authentic self and live from what is life affirming for you? No, probably not. But why not, why isn’t everyone happy when you become empowered? Simple, for those who are still holding onto their limited beliefs and self-imposed limits on their life and expression, your freedom pushes buttons. They may feel like their foundation has shifted. Or they may feel that if you do it, then they Should do it, and they are scared. Instead of acknowledging their own fear, they try to pull you back into line so their world stays safe and secure.

I experienced some of this recently when I announced that I was changing my name. I could feel that fear rise up, that I would leave, change, challenge their status quo and in other ways become someone that no longer fit in their lives. There were other undercurrents of fear for my safety and fear for theirs as well. If my life changed, what would happen to theirs?

Indeed, what would happen to theirs? Perhaps they will be inspired to make a shift for themselves in an area of their lives that are constrictive or out of balance. But the big question is, “Can you live your life based solely on the needs and comfort of others?” Absolutely not!

When you are living out of integrity with your soul, the deep part of who you know yourself to be, that radiates out into the world and in a way gives permission for others to do the same. But, if on the other hand, you step into your knowing and live from your heart, live what is life-affirming for you, you shine your light more strongly into the world, and may even provide a space and a freedom for others to do the same.

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.

Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.”

—Marianne Williamson
