Stop Sitting, Start Standing for Health with DIY Stand Up Desk with Exercise Option

Sitting Too Long vs Standing DIY Stand Up Desk

Sitting all day is HIGHLY unhealthy!

Time to STAND UP.

As an author and online entrepreneur, I used to sit a lot. I eat right, get enough rest, drink plenty of water, exercise regularly, etc. Bottom line … I care about my health. When you have had poor health and been able to turn it around and achieve vibrant health, you are willing to do lots of things to maintain that. So when I heard about how harmful sitting all day can be, I decided to do something about it.

Lots of people are purchasing stand up desks. There are even stand up desks with treadmills attached, so you can literally walk all day if you want to. I know enough about safety, fatigue, and such to know the treadmill idea probably won’t work for most people. It requires too much coordination. In a previous life (haha) I was an Industrial Engineer with an emphasis on safety, ergonomics, and team development.

I always keep safety in mind. I also consider ease of use. If it isn’t right there with you and easy to use, most people will abandon whatever it is very quickly. I’m always problem solving and this stand up desk and do a little exercise idea was quite intriguing.

I decided to rig up my own stand up desk before going out and buying one. My computer screen can be tilted, so I can look down and still read it easily. My keyboard and mouse cables are long enough to stretch to whatever height I need them to.

As an ergonomic professional, I know that regardless of whether you are sitting or standing, when you type on your keyboard, your arms need to be down at your sides, upper arms completely vertical, and a perfect 90 degree angle at the elbow. The wrists need to be perfectly flat. When you bend your wrist (either up or down) and type very much, you risk the pain and chronic problems associated with carpel tunnel and other wrist and tendon damage. If you are sitting, your thighs need to be parallel to the floor (hips bent at 90 degrees).

So I went looking for a box, or boxes, that would get my keyboard to the perfect height if I was standing. To figure out that height, you just have someone measure from the floor to your elbow. The tricky box (a board would also work) was something that was wide enough to accommodate the keyboard and the mouse. Luckily, we still had the box lying around from my son’s Xbox 360 Tony Hawk Shred accessory. It’s kind of like skateboarding with a video game. Anyway, the box was a great size for this application. Now I just needed something underneath that box to sit on top of my desk that would get me to the right height. I found a box the perfect height.

That worked very well. I tried it for a few days, standing for an hour, sitting for an hour, standing for an hour, etc.

But what to do about the exercise piece.

I’ve always loved The Firm workout videos and I happened to have their Wave exercise gizmo. I set that up where I would normally stand. I knew picking up my feet to walk on a treadmill wouldn’t be easy when trying to type or read text on a screen. But rocking side to side on the wave means you never have to pick your feet up. That I could easily do. I had to find a taller box to accommodate the extra height of the Wave from the floor.

Instead of sitting for an hour and rocking for an hour, then repeating, I find that I am rocking for most of the day. I find it easier than standing still, which makes my legs ache after awhile. Its a great workout. And, it solves the issue of sitting too long.

Even if you don’t want to add it to your desk, the Wave is a great workout. You can get one here.

If you have low back pain, alternating sitting and standing can strengthen and relax various muscles and potentially relieve some of that. I used to suffer from low back pain and found that the shoes I wore, chair I sat in, and the bed I slept on made a huge difference.

Have fun with your DIY stand-up desk.

Blackfish, SeaWorld, and the Sins of Dolphin and Whale Captivity!

WildDolphinLoversSm

A friend just saw the movie,Blackfish, for the first time and sent me a note wanting to know if I had seen the movie. I thought I would share with you what I shared with her:

“I’ve been advocating for captive cetaceans for over 20 years. Everyone in my “community” of dolphin and whale lovers, communicators, ambassadors, etc. is aware of the movie. I cry when I even see a photo of a dolphin or whale in captivity, I just can’t bring myself to view Blackfish. I’ve already seen more than enough actual footage of dolphins being rounded up with boats and explosives, babies being separated from their mothers and lifted out of the water in slings to be sent off to marine parks. I really don’t need to be reminded of the horrors. I am already highly aware.

Orcas captive vs wild

John Crowe, the diver who helped lift Lolita out of the water and immediately became an advocate for whales because of that experience, came to my home to have a conversation about how to help set her free. He is one of the people many feel played an important role in the documentary. Ken Balcolm, probably one of the most reputable and knowledgeable experts on wild orca behavior, is someone I’ve spent time with. I used to visit his Whale Research facility on San Juan Island when I lived there. We have had conversations. Etc. Etc.

Not sure if the movie mentions the horrors of Taiji, Japan, but every year in the town of Taiji, they take boats out to drive dolphin pods into what is known as “the cove” (also a movie), where they kill most of the dolphins and cull out a few to ship off to marine parks. It is a daily activity for several months each year. SeaWorld and its sister companies is a horrific business. It is so so sad for the animals.

If you love dolphins and whales, PLEASE don’t visit the shows or captive facilities. Doing so is an endorsement of the torture, kidnapping, murder, and slavery that goes on behind the scenes.

Orcas have closer knit families than humans. They stay with their mothers their entire lives. Granny, an orca from the Northwest, just turned 103.

Dolphin Advocate

On a more positive note, I have a group on Facebook called Wild Dolphin Lovers. https://www.facebook.com/groups/wilddolphinlovers/ There we post uplifting videos, images, and stories about wild dolphins and whales. We have a special thread called “Cetacean Concerns” and there is always a petition to sign or something to do or consider for those who want to help them.

Lolita is the reason I quit my job as an engineer. When I heard her story, I moved to the San Juan Islands to be near her family. I co-founded a non-profit for dolphins and whales to try to get her home. That was 20 years ago. We have no idea if she will ever be set free. Her pod in the northwest is on the endangered list and a recent court battle was won saying she is also endangered because she is from there. The courts haven’t budged on releasing her though. The plan is to move her to a sea pen, retrain her to catch wild fish, and if she is able to retrain to wild, let her swim free with her family. It’s a dream I, and many others, have held for many many years.

Last year I led a book collaboration that hit #1 on Amazon. It is called Dolphins and Whales Forever and includes stories by dolphin and whale “people” such as myself. http://amzn.to/1Jbqlmw.”

How to Achieve Big Dreams vs. Fighting Your Current Circumstance by Takara

Achieve Big Dreams by Takara

This message is for anyone unhappy with their circumstances.

First of all … they are there for a reason. Typically a lesson. Whether it is a disease, a bad relationship, a financial issue, living conditions less than ideal. Embrace where you find yourself. Stop fighting and surrender. Realize that if this is an eternal moment, then this is where I am for all time and embrace it. Make some friends. Commune with nature. Write a book. Whatever.Instead of hating, judging, and believing that this moment “should” look some other way, realize that all is as it should be. If it was “supposed” to be another way, it would be. Find Nirvana in your mind, go there often, and when the Universe has every little detail lined up the way it is intending, your reality will shift. But it really can’t as long as you are fighting where you are.

You have to find the beauty in everything – the moment, your surroundings. If it isn’t beautiful, then make it so. Cleaning up, rearranging, adding a tiny plant here, a beautiful image there. I plant flowers because I find them beautiful. When they begin to bloom, I cut them and bring them in the house. Right now we have glads blooming in the kitchen, the dining room, and my office.

I have to do all sorts of things to keep the deer from eating all the plants in the garden. I love the deer, so it forces me to be creative and innovative. I have to hunt for ways to have beauty and not harm the forest creatures. It means I have to tend to this beautiful creation all of the time. I have to pay attention to it. I have to nurture it. I have to protect it. I have to water and weed and spend time there.

The same is true of dreams. You can’t just have a dream and do nothing. You have to take consistent actions. And the bigger the dream, typically the more you have to stretch yourself and get out of your comfort zone in order to attain it.

I could not be a bestselling author if I kept doing the same old things I used to do. I had to do things I was very uncomfortable doing. Make phone calls, send emails to strangers, ask for help from people I didn’t know. When you have experienced the level of rejection in your life that I have, doing those things becomes almost impossible. But I did it anyway.

Because if I didn’t do it, no one would and then my beautiful book would sit on my shelf and no one else’s. If I had not taken those actions then people wouldn’t have breakthroughs in consciousness and understanding because they wouldn’t be trying the various forms of meditation I walk them through, they wouldn’t write me and say that just by reading the book, they felt significant shifts happening in their life because the energy it is encoded with is that powerful. I had to get out of my own way in order to help others.

That is the nature of big dreams.

Learning to Ride the Waves of Life

RideWavesSm

Things are moving fast these days. Events are occurring that you never anticipated. Dear friends are suddenly ill or dead. Happy kids are suddenly severely depressed to the point of suicide. You lose your job after 20 years. There is a car wreck here and an accident or illness there. What the heck is happening?

Well, it isn’t just the acceleration of what you might deem “bad.” Everything is accelerating including your ability to heal and your ability to grow personally and expand your consciousness.

Magic is everywhere and it is exhilarating – or it is horrible. And the choice is entirely up to you.

Have you noticed that I keep writing about the options you have about life?

Here are some things that I believe that are in direct contradiction to what most people believe. You can believe what I believe. Or you can believe something else. It doesn’t matter to me. But I know that what I believe works. It allows me to be hopeful. And it allows me to consciously alter my reality at will. O.K. I’m not able to alter ever single little thing I want when I want. But boy am I getting better at it all the time.

So here are some of the things I have grown to understand.

  • There are no victims.
  • There is no-one and no thing outside of you that has a greater influence on your life, your well being, your level of health or prosperity or happiness, than you yourself – what you believe subconsciously is what makes your life happen the way it does. Of course there are a few other little nuances that I explain in The Magnificent U Foundation Course, but your subconscious beliefs run the show.
  • God does not play favorites.
  • God is not masculine or feminine. The term God is so misunderstood and so distorted that I don’t even like to use it anymore. I prefer the term Divine Presence.
  • You are a sinner. But the term “sin” means incorrect thinking. What you believe, subconsciously, is not the divine Truth about Creator, about life, about yourself even. I believe everyone on the planet is a sinner – having warped beliefs. All you need to do is recognize your own distortions of the truth and heal them. And there are beings much more evolved than you, including Jesus Christ of the Light, who can be called on to assist you in that process.
  • The Golden Rule works. If you treat others kindly and you consider the possible impact on others when you say, or do, or even think something, then you will be showered with kindness by others. The kindness must be genuine. If you perform acts of kindness in order to satisfy one of your wounds – like the need to be needed for example – then it is NOT a true act of kindness. If you have expectations of how others will treat you if you treat them a particular way, then you are attached to the outcome. So it is NOT a true act of kindness. True acts of kindness can only come from someone who has healed their own wounds. And most people have not. Even popular teachers and channels and counselors must heal themselves first. As one of my early teachers, Stuart Wilde, used to say: “God forbid the healers.” Because you are drawn to what you need most. If you want to be a counselor or healer, then you need a great deal of counseling and healing yourself. And you will never be able to truly offer helpful and beneficial counsel or facilitate healing for others until you have healed your own wounds and “sins.” And the golden rule continues to apply. If you treat others badly, harming them in any way, then you will have nothing but pain and suffering later on in life. The black magician pays a thousand fold for his or her mistreatment of others. Those who are bitter and jealous and angry and vengeful are showered with the same. It is law. And it is so easy to recognize the course of action that leads to Light and joy and happiness. Is it not?
  • Forgive everyone for everything. It is the only thing that serves you. And besides, whatever you experience you called to yourself anyway. They just played out what your subconscious mind was broadcasting to the world. You might have been broadcasting, “I believe life is unfair” or “I believe the world is unsafe.” Whatever you believe, you will experience.

Which leads me back to the main topic at hand. Whatever you experience, you have created. Your beliefs drew to you the people, the circumstances, the unexpected things that are happening at rocket speed in your life right now.

So what can you do about it?

Well, you need to learn to surf. Ride the wave instead of crashing and being pounded under the surf and left for dead, beaten and battered on the shore.

Have you ever seen Lilo and Stitch? Great movie on many levels. Stitch is a created destroyer being from some distant galaxy that was sentenced to death because he was programmed to destroy. He escaped and fled to a little island named Hawaii on a little planet called Earth where he pretended to be a dog and became the pet of a little girl going through a great deal of emotional turmoil. When it seemed things couldn’t get any worse, a friend suggested that when there is nothing else, there is always surfing. So they all head for the beach. Stitch is terrified of water and big waves would be intimidating to anyone.

Everything you need to know about surfing through life is captured in Stitches expressions and his experience. At first there is terror. It is the unknown. Once you are on the board you either have to stay on it or you will be pounded in the surf, there are no other options. He hangs on for dear life to the leg of the older sister. And slowly he realizes that she knows what she is doing and that they aren’t going to crash. Then comes the euphoria and exhilaration of riding the wave, hair blowing in the breeze, there is nothing like it. It is grand. It is wonderful. It is better than anyone could have dreamed.

And that is what your life can be.

When the unexpected happens, you have to step into the unknown. The waves are crashing. You have no choice about that. You can get on the board and try to ride or you can give up and be pounded by the waves. Its entirely your choice. In order to ride, you have to fully feel the uncertainty and discomfort of where you are. And then you have to follow your intuition, your inner guidance, your inner knowing, and TRUST that it knows what its doing and that everything is as it should be. It is scary. It can even be terrifying. And you might be thinking, “What is going to happen to me?” Or, “What is going to happen to the one I love so much that is going through this awful experience?” But when you can go beyond the circumstances and the uncertainty and feel the exhilaration of each moment right here right now, magic happens.

Forget about “what if.” Forget about how you think life is suppose to be. Forget about what others would do. Forget about what you thought this moment was going to look like. Know that this moment looks like this instead. You have all of who you are, all of your talents, all of your gifts, all of your insight, all of your wisdom, all of your courage, all of your strength, all of your beauty, all of your truth to trust in. You have the whole host of heaven to assist you. You have your inner guidance – the most perfect navigation system ever designed every second of every day. You have your close and dear friends who truly do have your best interest at heart (and if you don’t have those kind of people in your life, you need to find some).

And you ask the most important question in the universe: “Why is this happening?” And you dig and you dig and you dig until you find the true answer and permanently heal the reason the circumstances showed up in your life. And in that moment of healing, who you are is changed forever. And then the circumstance that at first seemed like the worst thing that could ever happen, turned into the most exhilarating, most empowering, most beneficial thing that has ever happened to you.

What a gift. What a blessing.

I send you the love of the Universe to assist you in discovering all the “whys” you must face. You are no longer in a time of hiding. You can no longer pretend and cover up and deny the parts of yourself that are not the divine Truth. You are now in the time of the Great Illumination.

And I say, “Ride the wave with a smile on your face. Feel the wind in your hair. Feel the exhilaration of who you are becoming right here right now.”

Many blessings,
